So let’s set the scene. You recently got engaged and for some strange reason everywhere you seem to look there is wedding references. There are ads on the radio, in the paper and on TV that keep reminding you of your upcoming nuptials. There is even countless amount of wedding shows on TV like ‘Say Yes To The Dress’, ‘Don’t Tell The Bride’, ‘Four Weddings’ and of course ‘Bridezillas’.

All of these shows and in particular the last one has you fearing that you could be a Bridezilla! Fear not there is another type of bride you can be but you’ll have to ask yourself, could you be the Bridechilla?

The Bridechilla is a bride that if she was any more laid back she’d be asleep. She’s so cool that she pees ice cubes. The Bridechilla has no freaks outs and has no stress. It’s all about the attitude with the Bridechilla. She knows there’s plenty of time to organise the dress, the wedding day, the band, the DJ etc. The Bridezilla however is like a sheet of paper in origami, she folds under pressure.

A Bridechilla cares only for one thing and that’s the fact she is marrying the love of her life. A bridechilla says things like this:

To the bridesmaids – “I don’t care what you wear for my wedding…just find something you all like” and “Wear white or nude shoes or whatever you all agree on”. To a lot of bridesmaids this can be actually very irritating but as the bride will say, just go with the flow.

And to anyone that asks her what type of bride she’ll be – “I’m the best kind of bride, I just want to be happy”.

A Bridchilla is also the type of woman that will pick out her wedding dress in 1 day. She won’t spend weeks and months pondering of what looks better, the cut, the length, the fabric, should I wear a veil etc. She’ll try on a dress and go yep I look good in this, I’ll take it. Do you think you’re that type?

She knows there will probably be some sort of drama on the day but she knows it won’t be anything big that can’t be sorted. At this point you’re probably picturing some sort of hippie, barefoot in a field for her wedding and with flowers in her hair. But you’re wrong. I’ve been to the wedding of a Bridechilla.

She just go rid of the fuss, decided early where she wanted her wedding, knew she had enough time to save up for it and booked it. Everything was looked after then, from the food to the music and even the flowers. She just had to pick her dress and show up. I actually wore shorts and flip flops to the wedding. It was fantastic, I won’t lie.

Now I know there will be plenty of women who have been thinking about their big day for years. They probably have every little detail picked out but what I would say to those women, to really enjoy the whole experience, bring a bit of chill to the proceedings. As Bob Marley said “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”.

Go you! Your best friend has just got engaged and after all the madness that ensues afterwards she has asked you to help her walk down the aisle. If this isn’t your first rodeo and could probably give Katherine Heigl a run for her money in the movie ’27 dresses’, well then let’s tell the newbies the 5 things a bridesmaid needs to know!

1. There Will Be Expenses.

This one you’d think would be a given and that the expenses of everything would begin to dawn on anyone asked to be a bridesmaid. That’s why I’m always taken off guard when someone says there are surprised by the cost as all the little bits start to add up. Keeping the costs of hen parties down is our job but the cost of the dress for the wedding, a gift, the travel costs and hotel room for the wedding and the spending money, because who in their right mind is going to have an open bar at an Irish wedding.

2. The Bride Has The Last Word On The Dress.

The bride isn’t the only one who says yes to dress. You’ll be saying yes to the dress too like it or lump it. If the bride to be is choosing the dresses then pray to whoever you believe she doesn’t pick a monstrosity of a dress that no amount of accessorising will hide. Unless it’s a van to hide behind is you accessory item.  It goes with the territory of being a bridesmaid I’m afraid.

Even if you are one of the luckier bridesmaids that get to choose their own dress, you’ll probably still be restricted by the colour, fabric and even length of the dress.

3. Crisis Management Technician.

I really hope that your first outing as a bridesmaid is smooth sailing. However be prepared for drama as emotions are high around the wedding planning and the big day itself. So a part of the job spec for the role as a bridesmaid is to be someone that the bride can vent her anger on anything to do with the wedding too! It also may involve some crisis management as the flowers might not arrive in time, there’s an issue with the transport or she might get cold feet and you have to calm her down.

4. The Hen Party Will Be Fantastic.

Ok I’m a bit biased here as I know it would be a fantastic night or weekend if HenPartyCentral organised the hen. But getting back to the point, when the hen party weekend finally rolls around and everyone meets up to celebrate the bride to be there will be so much excitement. The realisation you’re away for a weekend with your best friends, enjoying a few drinks, great activities, relaxing and making memories will have you proud to have been asked to be a bridesmaid.

5. You Might Get A Bit Teary Eyed. 

I cannot stress this enough. I’ve been to plenty of weddings and I’m always amazed that none of the bridesmaids have tissues. Even if you think you won’t cry, you probably will. You’ll have spent the whole morning getting ready to walk down the aisle. Seeing how beautiful and happy she looks. You’ll enjoy being part of that inner circle and getting to celebrate every aspect of the day with her. So make sure and have some tissues. If anything you don’t want it to run your makeup and mascara you spent ages doing earlier in the day.

However in recent times many brides have decided to try this style for their last wedding photos. Be honest we all wish we could go back to a time when we either lived next door to our best friends or could simply walk to the other end of the estate to get them to come out and play. A simpler time and you could get cracking on planning a day full activities from the get go. The reality however nowadays is that many of our friends live in different cities and different countries.

It’s not uncommon to have a bridesmaid that is living down under who is going to make the long trip home for one of their besties weddings. A bride to be of course will have the maid of honour and possibly the other bridesmaids close to her to help pick out the wedding dress and help with the planning. So with that in mind and trying to include everyone in the preparations, here is how to involve out of town bridesmaids that may only make the wedding day.

Pinterest Inspiration Board.

Social Media gets a lot of flack but it has some great qualities especially with keeping in touch with family and friends living abroad. As time zones can play havoc on when you can be in contact with each other, set up a Pinterest Inspiration board and get all the girls to share their ideas, styles and themes. Pinterest has loads of ideas to really build an interactive board and it’s a fantastic way to involve the ‘Out of Town’ bridesmaids in helping the bride come to a decision as to what will be happening on the big day.

Dates, Dates and More Dates.

Speaking as someone that has lived abroad I really can’t stress enough how important picking dates for things is. If one of your bridesmaids’ for example lives just across the pond, the chances are she can make the dress fittings, the hen and of course the wedding. She will however need to know dates so she can book flights at a reasonable price. There is a lot of expense when travelling abroad or back for a wedding and having plenty of time to plan and budget and spread out costs is always welcome.

Also this gives every chance possible to he ‘Out of Town’ bridesmaid to make it back for all the events prior to the big day.

Skype Calls.

This is another great idea to get all of the out of town bridesmaids involved in the wedding plan processing. It allows everyone to chat about what’s happening, give ideas and opinions on things for the big day. It’s also a great a way for any of the bridesmaids that haven’t met to get to know each other. It also allows the bride to vent about the mother in law and how she wants this and how their cousin Milton has a fancy camera and can do the wedding photos.

Facebook Group.

Everyone is on it in some shape or form. So it’s always handy to set up a Facebook group so that everyone can keep in touch, and send messages to each other in an instant. It also allows any of the ‘Out of Town’ bridesmaids send on ideas for the wedding or dresses they saw online straight away instead of posting it to Pinterest. It also leads to the girls sending on some funny pics and videos to get everyone excited about the hen party and wedding.

Delegate Roles.

Each bridesmaid including the maid of honour will have a major role to play on the big day and the lead up to it. So take some time to think what your ‘Out of Town’ bridesmaid role could be. It could be to make a reading at the wedding, which she can get ready for at home. Or you can have her help decide on the gifts for that the bride will give the bridesmaids and flower girls on the day. With one of your bridesmaids being abroad, she can pick up the gifts with no fear of being spotted by the rest of the bridal group. It also shows how much you appreciate there involvement in the wedding and the bridal party.
